How to pass the Kansas knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Kansas manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Kansas law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Kansas written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) 14 years for an instruction permit
Motorcycle 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) 14 years for a motorcycle instruction permit
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years, or 16 years for a farm custom harvesting commercial license limited to class B and class C vehicles

Car. The Kansas Driving Handbook states the knowledge test is 25 multiple choice questions covering traffic signs, pavement markings and Kansas laws, and that a score of 80 percent is required to pass. Applicants get four attempts before a six month wait.

Motorcycle. A class M applicant must pass a knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test. The Division of Vehicles does not publish a separate question count for the class M knowledge test, so the noncommercial format of 25 questions at 80 percent is shown here.

CDL. K.S.A. 8-2,133 requires the Kansas CDL knowledge and skills tests to meet the federal minimum standards of 49 C.F.R. part 383. The Division of Vehicles does not publish the exact number of general knowledge questions.
